Dr. Xavier Mir (MotoGP™ Traumatology Specialist) : “Marc Marquez underwent surgery 13 days ago and today he returned to the operating room. The first operation was successful, what was not expected was that the plate was insufficient. An accumulation of stress in the operated area has caused the plate to suffer some damage , so today the titanium plate has been removed and replaced by a new fixation. The rider has not felt pain during this period. He has always followed the medical advice given and the feeling from his body. Unfortunately, an over stress has caused this issue. Now we have to wait 48 hours to understand the recovery time.”

I guess you could say “I told you so”. I have a feeling he’s going to sit this one out completely and let everything set.

What dose of painkillers do you have to be on to damage a titanium plate in your arm? :O

anyhoo...likely he did that with very little painkillers

the kinda painkillers that would help with that are not the ones you want be on at 200mph

Well I mean, if a human can mangle a  titanium plate in their arm... Yes, I suppose! :)

It’s all about size, shape, and loading. I can break carbon fiber if it is paper thin. If the engineer screwed up it wouldn’t be that difficult.

Perhaps, but realistically one would think that they would have calculated the properties accounting for the stress it would be subjected too . Obviously I’m no doctor but I find it interesting that perhaps it was going to be too weak when set and him going out and wrecking it immediately   was actually a good thing as opposed to later . He wasn’t pushing himself and the bike  last week.

True but he could be subjecting it to loads outside of a normal person. It was probably designed for standard use without a moto GP rider in mind for the forces.

I think they made a serious miscalculation though and or it was a quick throw-in. It shouldn’t be any surprise the forces that his arm has and will deal with in regards to training and riding top level in the premier class.

I think they thought he’d sit out the couple of weeks and let it heal and set, perhaps it would have been sufficient ? But perhaps not... It’s an interesting conundrum to speculate though I suppose not really original with regards to athletic injuries .

I feel bad for Marques, but I’m gonna firmly plant my feet in the “I could have told you that” camp . As far as the plate failure, my bet is either a screw backed out of the plate, or a piece of fracture fragment moved. I highly doubt the plate broke, and “hardware failure” encompasses a few different things.
